MALAVIYA BHAVAN

  • Malaviya Bhavan, the former residence of the founder of the University, was opened for public in 1961 during Malaviya Centenary Year. This memorial building serves as the centre of studies and research on the life and teachings of Mahamanaji. It consists of five main constituents - Geeta - Yoga Library, Yoga Sadhana Kendra, Geeta Samiti, Malaviya Adhyayan Sansthan, and Malaviya Centre for value studies.Malaviya Bhavan The Centre for Yoga runs Diploma and Certificate Courses in Yoga. The Geeta Samiti organises morning lectures on religion-philosophical topics. Every Sunday Geeta discourses by eminent persons are held. The Centre for Value Studies offers a short-term course on Value Education for integrated Personality Development. Malaviya Bhavan has a beautiful garden with a variety of plants. Every year the Flower show of the University is held here. The Central Assembly Hall of the Malaviya Bhavan is often used for important cultural and religious events and lectures.

BHARAT KALA BHAVAN

  • Bharat Kala Bhavan, the art and archaeological museum of Banaras Hindu University, is an internationally known institution. No University in India has a museum of this dimension. Its 100,000 holdings include historically important archaeological materials, paintings, textiles and costumes, literary materials, decorative arts and India philately. The museum has twelve galleries where only 2 percent of the total collection is exhibited but the museum organises periodicalBharat Kala Bhavan exhibitions with the materials taken out of the reserves. Research scholars and teachers of about a dozen academic disciplines visit the Museum for study and research. A Master's Degrees course in Musicology is conducted in this Museum. The Museum is also frequented by large number of scholars in the related field from various parts of India and abroad and is visited daily by many tourists both national and international.
  • Participation in national and international exhibitions has been one of its activities. Its other activities include organization of memorial lectures, periodical lectures, seminars and symposia, workshop on various aspects of Indian history and culture. The museum houses a well- organised library with particular references to books on Indian art and culture. one of the major activities of this museum has been its publication programme. So far it has twenty three publications. The Museum owes its origin and subsequent development to Padmavibhusan Rai Krishnadasa. Nobel Laureate Poet Ravindra Nath Tagore had been its first Honorary Chairman. Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi visited the collection. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru laid the foundation of the present building in the University in 1950 and in 1962 when the building was ready, he inaugurated it for the people. The Museum has been declared as a University Museum of National Importance.

HEALTH CARE

  • Established in 1926 with 96 beds, Sir Sunderlal Hospital of B.H.U. has grown into a 927 bed hospital (750 for Modern Medicine,127 for Ayurvedic, Private 42 beds and others) with all modern medical, surgical and investigative amenities. It is the only Tertiary Carehospital.jpg (5684 bytes) Hospital in the North-Eastern U.P. which caters to more than 10 crore population. It is primarily a teaching and training hospital attached to the Institute of Medical Sciences, B.H.U. The Hospital consists of the following sections -OPD, Emergency, Inoatient, ICU/CCU,OT services, Referral Services, Blood Bank, highly equipped CSSD & Laundry, Center for Clinical Investigations, Radiology, Microbiology, Immunology and Mortuary. The Hospital has all the Clinical disciplines which include Radiotherapy & Radiation Medicine, Pediatrics, Pediatric -Surgery, Ophthalamology,E&T, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, General Medicine, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology, Gastroentrology, Dermatology and Dental Surgery. The daily turnout of patients is about 1,700 in O.P.D. and annually there are 30,000 admissions. The annual turnout of OPD patients is about 5,30.000.The approximate bed occupancy is 95% and total surgical operations done annually is about 30,000 (45% major and 55% minor). Free diet to 40% of Inpatients is offered. Besides, the hospital has a Kidney Transplant Unit, C.T. and whole Body Scan facility, a Dialysis Unit, Radiotherapy Cobalt unit. The unique feature of the Hospital is that it renders specialty and superspeciblity services through Modern Medicine, Ayurveda and Yoga under one roof. The Hospital also has a Nursing School affiliated to U.P.State Medical Faculty, Lucknow, which admits 24 students each year. In addition to this centralized Hospital, the University has a number of Health Care centers for its students & employees. There is a separate Health Centre for the students. Students get free medical treatment including tests. In the main hospital also students receive attention on priority basis. Special medical attention is given to the foreign students.

THE CENTRAL LIBRARY

  • Banaras Hindu University, with 3 Institutes and 14 faculties comprising 124 subject departments, has an elaborate library system with the Central Library at the apex, the 3 Institute libraries, 8 Faculty libraries and 25 Departmental libraries. The total collection in the libraries of the University exceeds 11 lakh volumes including over 10,000 manuscripts in various scripts.Central Library
  • The Central Library is one of the largest libraries of the country. It was established in the Telang Hall of the Central Hindu College in the Kamachha campus of the University in 1916, with a small but precious collection donated by Professor P.K.Talang. Nurtured in its infancy Bu the renowned historian Sir Jadunath Sarkar, it had eminent scholars of the library science like Dr.S.R.Ranganathan, the father of Library movement in India, as its Libraries.
  • The Central Library changed its location to present building, in 1941, situated in the main campus. The construction of the present majestic building was started in 1927 with a very generous donation from Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda after whom it has been named. This elegant building was designed on the suggestion of Mahamana Malaviyaji.
  • The Central Library of the University is the only reference and research supporting library in the vicinity of about 300 kilometers. The Library collection has unique pieces of rarities of books and journals dating back to the 18th century. In addition to its main collection, the library has specialised collections like MSS collection, Rare and Out of Print Materials collection, Reserve collection, United Nations and Government Publications collection, Local History collection, University and its Founder collection, Staff Publications collection, etc.
  • The Central Library is also having internet facility and is networked with all the major University libraries and libraries of other institutions of repute. On the strength of rich collection of books and journals, this library has been chosen by INFLIBNT Centre, as an inter-university centre of UGC, to function as document delivery centre in the region.

CENTRAL OFFICE COMPLEX

  • The Central Office Complex of the University consists of the Registrar's Office, the Finance Office, Internal Audit Office, the Controller of Examinations' Office, Public Relation Office and a Multipurpose Hall. The main building of the Central Office comprises the office of the Vice-Chancellor, office of the Registrar, two Committee room, and a number of divisions like Administrative,b11.jpg (20586 bytes) Academic, Development, Accounts, Finance, University Works Department and Audit office. This building is flanked on the one side by the building of the Controller of Examinations' Office and on the other by the P.R.O.'s office. The Controller of Examinations' Office has several divisions like Entrance Test Cell, Thesis Cell, Moderation Cell, etc. It organises all the examination of the University including Entrance Tests. The Multi Purpose Hall with a seating capacity for 1000 examinees is used as venue for examinations. The central office co-ordinates the functioning of the office of all the institutes and Faculties of the University.

BARKACHHA CAMPUS

  • Banaras Hindu University has a sprawling campus of 2700 acres in the district of Mirzapur at a distance of about 90 kms. From Varanasi. There is a proposal to develope it as the second Campus of theb28.jpg (18641 bytes) University. At present this Campus has a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of the Institute of Agriculture, a Guest House, a P.G. Hostel, a cow-shed and a large number of agricultural research farms. At the farm fields of the campus as also in farmers fields demonstrations are given by the scientists and technologists of the Institute to the farmers of the twelve blocks of the district about scientific methods of cultivation, farm machinery, plant protection chemicals. Technical known-how, seeds, plant protection chemicals, fertilizers etc. are provided to the farmers under a scheme funded by ICAR, New Delhi. Students of the Institute of Agriculture periodically visit the KVK Centre for in-field training and interaction with the farmers. There is a great scope for the development of horticulture and forestry on this campus. Barkachha Campus has a sylvan surrounding that includes hilly ranges, water-falls, streams, springs and an overspread greenery.

H O S T E L S

  • Banaras Hindu University being a residential University, most of the students reside in hostels. The University has a chain of 53 hostels.b10.jpg (9774 bytes) Most of the hostels are situated in the hostel row of the campus. Different hostels are marked for different disciplines & Faculties. For girls there are ten hostels,four in the compound of MMV and the rest at other locations on the campus. There are three hostels for boys located in the city. Some big hostels like Birla hostel have nearly 300 rooms in each. There are 3 separate hostels for foreign students. Each hostel runs its own mess for the convenience of the student inmates and all the hostels have basic amenities,T.V.,games room and common room. The playgrounds fronting the hostels enable the students to spend some time in games.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

  • The University organises a large of cultural activities throughout the year in order to promote and project the creative faculty of the students. Cultural events like dance, drama, music, exhibition, fairs,danc2.jpg (10187 bytes) etc., help to create a healthy atmosphere. Foreign cultural troops often visit the University and give performances which provide opportunities for exchange and fusion of cultures of the world.

GAMES AND SPORTS

UNIVERSITY SPORTS BOARD

  • The University Sports Board, an important unit of Banaras Hindu University, coordinates different sports activities among various units of the University. Its function involves selection and coaching of sportsmen in different games and sand teams for participation in Competitions / Tournaments organised at the zonal and All-Indiasport1.jpg (15154 bytes) levels, under the auspices of the Association of India University Sports Board looks after 19 games for which training is organised by able coaches in FOUR complexes. In the AMPHI THEATRE GROUND, training and coaching is done in 13 games like Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football Handball, Hockey, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Tennis, Table-Tennis, Volleyball, Boxing, Squash. SHIVAJI HALL caters to the need of Gymnastic and Malkhambh, Weight lifting and Best physique, Wrestling and Yogasan. The J.K. BADMINTON HALL is an indoor Badminton Hall and the SWIMMING POOL meets the requirement of Aquatics. An INDOOR STADIUM is fast coming up which is not yet other university.

VISHWANATH TEMPLE

  • The Vishwanath temple of the University is a massive temple complexb8.jpg (8875 bytes) consisting of seven temples. The Shiva temple is in the ground floor and the Lakshmi Narayan and the Durga temple are in the first floor. This elegant temple structure is located almost at the centre of the University campus. The laying of the foundation stone of the temple took place in march, 1931 and took almost three decades to complete its construction. Its sky penetrating spiraling top is 252 ft. high. The whole of Geeta and extracts from the sacred Hindu scriptures are inscribed with illustrations on the inner walls of the temple. Devotees, pilgrims and tourists from all over the world visit the temple throughout the year. Religious disourses are held periodically in the central hall of the temple. Vishwanath temple is the spiritual center of the University.
